march 26, 2012. was walking around DC when i heard the familiar sounds of chanting, saw the familiar ominous presence of police cars and officers, heard some sirens. so i went to find out what was happening…it was a student-led protest on student loan debt and the immorality of organizations like sallie mae. a group of about 200 was chanting and holding fists up, waving signs in the faces of about 40 police officers of various ranking (from lowly security guards to blue suits to FBI agents). cop vans, motorcycles and sedans drove by and crowded the area. there were 20 students sitting down in the entrance way of the capital one bank where the sallie mae organization is located. when policemen forcefully began handcuffing the protestors sitting down, the chants called out the officers themselves: “POLICE OFFICERS. ARE ARRESTING UNARMED STUDENTS. WHO ARE DEEP IN DEBT. PUTTING THEM IN HANDCUFFS. FOR REQUESTING A MEETING WITH SALLIE MAE. THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE? THE POLICEMEN KNOW THIS IS WRONG!”
